Throttle Position Sensor S80 1999

I was told today that my car needed a throttle position sensor, the code that came up was 1132. This is the same car that I have been having issues with for awhile now. So far I put in a new fuel filter, a tuneup and a mass air flow sensor and now they tell me it's the throttle position sensor. I was told that there is a volvo recall on this recall# 155. They also told me that Volvo has a software upgrade for this issue. Does anyone know about this issue.

Thanks
Bob

Thanks for all the information, I think where getting closer to getting this fixed.

Can you tell me where this sensor is located and is it something I can do at home.

    Thanks Again
    Bob

XemodeX offers a permanant solution. It is less expensive than an ETM from Volvo that is guaranteed to fail. Google XemodeX. Google Don Wilson and ETM.
There is alot of information on Matthews Volvo Site.

I put one in my car. It is a shade tree mechainc level job.
The difference is like night and day. Hesitation and surging are gone. Uneven idle is a thing of the past. You need to make sure everything else is right so you don't mistake the ETM for another problem.

The Marelli ETM fails 100% at 100K Miles. The design uses thin film pots where
the wiper wears out the carbon tracks.

XemodeX replaces the thin film pot with a Hall Effect Digital Angle Sensor. No contact. Nothing to wear out.

When I researched this a few years ago, I don't remember coming across this solution. I wonder if it came out since then.

I was under the impression that the software smoothing that Volvo implemented solved for the most part the problem. Obviously a total failure would make even smoothing no good.

Interesting to see a third party came to the rescue with a real long term solution to the problem.

You need to check that message number again, I came up with:
P1132 Lack Of HO2S Switch - Sensor Indicates Rich
    which is the oxygen sensor.

P1123 Throttle Position Sensor In Range But Higher Than Expected
is not what you want to see either.

You have the first generation Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) which is known to fail. The ETM was recalled, but only for 10 years from first day of delivery or 200K miles. Yours is probably 10 years old and no longer covered. A quick check with a local dealer will confirm this.

I am not sure if your car has both a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) AND an Electronic Throttle Module (ETM) but the ETM has a sordid history of failures and I'm pretty sure there was a TSB about them that assured you could get a new one. I think that may have expired for your car though (10 years). You should check into that.

If you do some research on this site and others for "ETM" you'll find this is discussed quite a bit, and also that there is a Canadian company that has a (somewhat pricey) lifetime/forever fix.

IF that is indeed your problem. First you need to find out if it is a TPS or ETM that is giving you trouble. Again, I'm not sure if your car has one or the other or both or what. I suspect if it has the ETM it would not need a TPS.
