Thumping noise durring hard rain S70 1999

I have had my C70 for 1 year. Looks like I have experiencing most of the minor irritations and problems reported by others. Too bad Quality control can't be a better, but the dealer has done a good job.

As you may have heard we have not had much rain down here in Austin, for some time. Now that we are getting some good "gulley washers", I have noticed a thumping noise, comming from the general area of the sun roof - deflecting the roof doesn't have any effect. Any ideas? This is strictly a rain related phenomenu.

    I too have the same thing in my C70. Now that we have Abe's explanation, is there a method to prevent this, or should we even worry about it? I can't imagine water getting in there is a good thing.

    With enough water flowing, the seal around sunroof will let some pass. The curvature of the roof yields a low pressure area and where the tubes for the sunroof drain pan go out is a higher pressure area so you get a "glug, glug, glug" noise when the air gurgles up through the water.

    Does your noise sound at all like what I described might be it?

      more like a dull banging noise. Doesn't sound like gurgling. This only occurs in heavier rain at 50 MPH plus.

        AAAahhhhhhh, it was not my imagination or radio! I heard the same type noises also at +50 in pretty good rain. It appeared to me to occur between the headliner and roof, from both sides, behind me. Abe, again you are a wealth of information!! JB, hope you enjoy Austin. Moved from there to Colorado, boh places have so much to offer. Still miss good texmex. Think of the deprived next time you are at Chuys!

          I've encountered the same sounds in my C70,

          the dealer isn't sure what it's caused by except possible water

          being splashed against the plastic wheel well guards and causing a reverb sound to be transmitted throughout the car...

          If you have ever scraped your “Air dam” is sounds as if your tarring the front suspension out from underneath the car so it may be the way the echo sound in the cabin..

          Also in heavy rain it sounds as if it hailing and when you get ou t of the car it’s going to be covered with dents from the rain.
