Shudder when braking hard 850 1997

I *think* I have a problem with my brakes. I was doing a 0-60 run once and when braking, I felt a shudder from the rear end. I could feel the back end shudder violently. One of my friends said that it was brake fade (whatever that means...) and was normal since I brake-torqued when doing the 0-60 run. The heat supposedly builds up so much when I brake-torqued so that caused the vibrations. Well I didn't think anything about it until today when I accelerated to about 50 mph when the light turned green. Well I had to come to a stop then I felt the same shudders/vibrations as mentioned earlier. Is this something I should be worried about? It doesn't happen all the time, only when I accelerate hard, then come to a complete stop. TIA.

To ward off warped rotors you should not put much pressure on the brake pedal when you come to a stop light after braking very hard. I sometimes even put the car into neutral and let the rotor rotated to another spot between the calipers. In addition, when you keep your foot on the brake at a stop light heat cannot dissipate where the pads come into contact with the rotor.

I dont think the "brake-torque" would heat up the rotors & pads *that* much because you were standing still...no?

I do think a few 0>60>0 will heat up the brakes enough for "brake fade"......that would give them a mushy feel, and longer than normal stoping distances, not the vibration you talk about.

I also think that your rotors are warped....it could be just the rear, or both front and rear. This could be from you beating the hell out of them, or uneven torque on the lug bolts, or both.

I think its time for new rotors, pads, and fluid flush(maby some stainless steel braded lines while your at it???)......I would go with all OEM Volvo stuff, but Brembo (rotors & calipers) work real good on all my motorcycles, so I know one of these days I’ll at least try some brembo rotors on my S70....for pads its OEM though.

    good luck,

It sounds like your rotors are warped, this is a common problem for the 850's. Power braking or brake torque isn't good for the brakes because the brakes and rotors heat up very quickly, and suddenly stopping a 3500lb car also causes alot of heat. The only way to solve the warping problem is to get a better set of rotors such as brembo slotted/vented rotors....I have the same problem in my 850, my next rotors will be brembo slotted rotors for the front.

    Just curious. What is "brake-torque"?

Brake-torque is when you press the brake with your lef t foot and press the accelerator with your right foot at the same time. With this method, you can get the turbo to spool up since you can press the accelerator to 1800-2500 RPMS which is usually when the turbo kicks in.
