Code won't clear 850 95

So tonight I got a fault in my SRS system, code 2-3-2, apparently something wrong with the left seat belt tensioner. I try to clear the code to see if it's a fluke and it won't clear. After looking at Bay 13's instructions (http://www.volvospeed.com), I'm reading the single code, then supposedly clearing it by holding down on the button for 6-7 seconds, waiting for the light to come on solid, then holding the button down for another 6-7 seconds. Key is in the II position because I can read the code. But when I press the button once again, the code still shows up.

So what gives? Either I'm doing it wrong, and the code actually isn't clearing, or I'm doing it right and the code gets immediately set again - but I thought that you had to start the car to have it check the system again and returns faults as necessary.

I really hope it's the former. This car has already cost me too much this month. Friggin Volvos.

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

Hi Folks;

The published times to hold the button push for code clearing are somewhat in error. Note also: "DTC's can be erased only when all have been displayed and the first DTC has been repeated at least once."

This works most of the time for me; sometimes I have to do it twice.

1. Push and hold the test button for 20 seconds and release.

2. About 5 seconds after release an acknowledging light will come on.

3. While the light is still on, press and hold the test button for 20 seconds and release.

4. The acknowledge light will come on again. Wait 2 or 3 seconds.

5. Press test button for 1 second and release.

6. If you were successful you will get the 1-1-1 code.

7. Turn the ignition off.

8. Start engine; MIL should be off.

This is my slight modification of the procedure on page 52 of TP 2301202.

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

It could be that you have not read all codes before trying to clear them, after you read 232 do you push the button for 1 second again and see if code 232 repeats? After reading all codes and then clearing, I turn the ignition off, then start the car.

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

Hey Rich,

Thanks for replying. Yeah, 232 is the only code that is set. I read it several times to make sure. After reading the code, I then held down on the button for 6-7 seconds, released it, waited for the light to come on, then held it down again for 6-7 seconds. The light went out. After another second, I pushed the button again for one second. It reads back 232 again.

So I'm thinking

(a) either I'm doing it wrong or

(b) the code is getting immediately set again right after it gets cleared.

Maybe I should just cut power after I reset the codes?

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

You can try cycling the power but I've got the feeling that if the code is a hard fault (not intermittint) it may not clear out. The left seat belt tensioner may need the connector reseated, I have seen the code fixed by, removing the "B" piller trim and unplug and plug the connector a few time and then, try clearing the codes again. At the shop we would put a dummy load in the connector to help eliminate items in the circuit.(the tensioner )

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

Hey Rich (and Cheng as well), thanks for all your help.

I was able to get the B-pillar open (surprised as to how easy it was), but where exactly is the connector? I'm sure it is staring me right in the face, but I only got a cursory glance at it this morning as I was late for work. I want to make sure I am connecting/disconnecting the right thing.

Thanks.

-Malcolm

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

Its the connector at the end of the orange wire, I think it is half white half (something else). The end is only 1/2" by 1", and has two very small holes.

Re: Code won't clear 850 95

That's what I thought. Is there any secret to removing the B pillar trim? Any specific procedure?

Thanks,

-Malcolm

B Pillar Removal 850 95

Malcolm,

I removed the driver side B-pillar in my 95 855 this summer for replacing the plastic clip/holder which holds the upper part of B-pillar. It was very easy to remove. All you have to do is to grep the top of B-pillar and pull it out. There are 3 set of clips that holding the B-pillar.

Hope this help.
