Tranny Problems V70-XC70 2001

Hi,
I have 2001 V70 2.4T and lately, it generated a CEL. The codes that it spurted out of my OBD scanner were:
P1618 - Fault in lead between AW50-52 and Motronic 4.3
P0810 - Clutch Position Control Error
I just flushed the tranny and the shifting improved a bit but after a few miles of driving, the CEL went on again and it generated the same codes as above. My mechanic friend told me that my transmission module may be faulty but I don't know where to find it and if it is really this part that is causing this problem. I checked with my local dealer and they told me that there are no recalls on my car and it's softwares has been updated. Prior to this, the car has been great. Can you please help and point me in the right direction. Thanks a bunch!

On the later models, there is no lever on top of the computers in the box. You have to take the "sides" of the box off by taking out a screw on the rear corner toward the engine and prying back the clips at the bottom on all sides. once the box is off, you will see pink slides at the base of each computer. Push the slides toward the front of the car...both sides of the TCU and wiggle the unit out of the plug. Be sure not to touch the pins and reinstall carefully. One other thing to try before you pull the computer. On the strut tower, drivers side, right behind the air cleaner, is a ground connection. It's a 10mm bolt. Take it off and clean it. I take some sandpaper and remove the paint from the contact point on the strut tower. This is the signal ground for the computers. I have had some success curing strange problems by just cleaning the ground connections. Good Luck

Two new codes for me to think about. In the pre 2001 cars, the TCU was on the driver's side, close to the air cleaner box, and the ECU/EFI was in the computer box on the passenger fender. Where they put the TCU in 2001 is beyond me.

Open the computer box on the pass side and take a look. They are labeled. The modules do come out if you want to look on the bottom contact side, just in case a worm crawled in. Don't touch the contacts with bare fingers, the oil will come off your clean finger tips.

A junk yard will have a used TCU or ECU at a reasonable cost. What bothers me is the 'clutch position' error when you don't have a clutch.

Thanks for the prompt response KlausC. By the way, how do you remove the ECU or TCM from the box. I tried to pry it out but seem to be stuck. Is there a lever or so that holds it to the box? Thanks.

My 1998 had a large metal lever to hold the ECUs in place, flipping the lever back allowed me to gently pry the ECU straight up. Make sure it goes back in the same direction.
