S60/S80 or a 940/960

I'd posted this on the 900 page, but I'd like some input from the FWD folks!I'm looking to get a used Volvo but waffling as to what to get. I'm between a 940/960 or a S60/S80. Needs: RELIABLE, decent gas mileage, and comfy for a big guy. I can do most of the mechanicals but don't want to most of my time or $$$ working on it. As far as the S60/S80 goes, does a FAQ exist for them like the 700/900's? What kind of things do I need to look for or stay away from? Comments and opinions are greatly appreciated!

S60/S80 or a 940/960

Before buying a 940/960 -- have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBDyeWofcLY (Fifth Gear - Renault Modus v Volvo 940 Crash Test ) Car safety technology has definitely improved over the last 20 years.

Might consider the 850 and also the 1998 S70. After 1998 Volvo went to a "drive by wire" system so the later cars are less shade tree mechanic-friendly.

Consumer Reports recommends several years/versions of the S60 and S80 as used cars in their April 2010 issue. You can probably find it at your public library.

S60/S80 or a 940/960

The S60 is a bit cramped. I am 6'7" and cannot drive one. The S80 is nice and comfortable - BUT the electrics are terrible. The T5 engine is best in the S80, avoid the 6cyl at all costs until 2008.

I like the 940, but there are limited safety devices. Yes, if you can find a 1995 940T, they are comfy but old and watch out for rust and falling headliners.

I would look for an S80 T5, fwd, 2002+, with maintenance records. Dealers ask too much and Craigslist is a crap shoot. But there are nice examples, you just have to take your time and find one you like.

Nothing beats a good climate control with heated seats!

S60/S80 or a 940/960

I have an S60. I've owned a 92 960 wgn, a 97 960 wgn and a 97 S90. Better gas mileage with the S60. Best I ever got from the 960's was 22, no matter how fast or slow I drove it. I liked the RWD positration cars. I would try for a 97 or 98 S90 or V90. Timing belt is 70K vs 105K for the S60. The 960 line would probably be better for you as a big man. The 960's and S90's are appointed a little nicer than the S60, it was the top of the line in the early to late 90's. Just one man's opinion.
