S60R intermittant coolant temp sensor failure S60 2006

Happened 3 times: 1) no activity on dash temp gauge, totally dead. 2) ECU definitely goes into a "limp home" mode b/c horsepower is down from 300 to about 100 (not kidding). 3) after 4-5 drive cycles, the Check Engine light comes on. 4) eventually a few days later, the gauge returns to normal and Check Eng light goes off several drive cycles later.
Tapped on brass sensor on engine, wiggled wires, etc, w/ no immediate effect. It returns to working while driving each time(?)
The last 2 times it stopped were the same day that I changed oil and then immediately after I filled it up w/ gas yesterday. Coincidence?
Any ideas on what to do until I can take it in? Any help w/ where the wiring would have connections under the hood (other than at the sensor)? thanks

UPDATE S60R intermittant coolant temp sensor failure S60 2006

dealer performed warranty work and said that it was a TSB for a software / ECM update. Glitch also applies to other volvo models and supposedly can cause many random, random problems that no one would normally suspect as a computer problem (like a dead temp gauge).
"Part" on invoice was 30677021 or 30677021-5. Let's hope it works.

UPDATE S60R intermittant coolant temp sensor failure S60 2006

Thanks for the part number. Ii wish more folks would share that info on the boards.

Is there any indication from your bill what the TSB number is? Could you inquire with your dealer (for your records of course) and post the number here for the rest of us?

Missing signal from sensor. Resistance was ok from sensor and four volts from connecter into sensor. relay to check or common connectors to check?

The new engines no longer have a separate/replaceable ECT sensor, it is part of the housing and it all gets replaced with a new thermostat. $$$.

So, the next time it fails on the dash, try to check the Ohms at the temp sensor and if it is zero then that is your problem. If the Ohms are at least 200+ (higher with a cold engine), then it is the wiring.
