S60R intermittant coolant temp sensor failure S60 2006

Happened 3 times: 1) no activity on dash temp gauge, totally dead. 2) ECU definitely goes into a "limp home" mode b/c horsepower is down from 300 to about 100 (not kidding). 3) after 4-5 drive cycles, the Check Engine light comes on. 4) eventually a few days later, the gauge returns to normal and Check Eng light goes off several drive cycles later.
Tapped on brass sensor on engine, wiggled wires, etc, w/ no immediate effect. It returns to working while driving each time(?)
The last 2 times it stopped were the same day that I changed oil and then immediately after I filled it up w/ gas yesterday. Coincidence?
Any ideas on what to do until I can take it in? Any help w/ where the wiring would have connections under the hood (other than at the sensor)? thanks
