Volvos have always been 'rough' and truck like (according to my Dad). SAABs also. But they become really smooth at 60+ mph. I guess roads in Sweden aren't full of expansion cracks like ours are.
There should never be any occillation after hitting a sharp bump. Nore should the nose of the car dip when stopping.
You might want to have the mechanic check the engine mounts, the rubber on the passengerside mount could have separated.
At 88K, your shocks and struts should still be in good shape. I replaced my struts at 155K.
