Vacuum Leak S40-V40

All,

The OBDII code reader indicated a lean condition which, I think, is a vacuum leak. The car is a 2000 S40 with the 1.9T engine.

What should I be looking for?

We already had the dealer "reattach the turbo hose" because the car died on my daughter in the library parking lot. I suspect that either that hose is leaking or perhaps the exhaust manifold gasket, or maybe even a hose between the MAF and the throttle body.

I'm guessing that all of these hoses are a couple of tens of dollars to purchase and likely easy to replace. How difficult is an exhaust gasket to replace? I do have a torque wrench but don't have the Chilton manuals (will order them in the next 5 minutes).

What is your experience?

Thanks!
Gary

Vacuum Leak S40-V40

Interesting you should note vacuum leaks--our 2000 s40 had also developed some problems--long cranks to start unless recently running (w/in 15 mins), generally rough idle. Constant CEL. Thought it was fuel pressure regulator and/or O2 sensor(s). Younger (smarter than dad) son decided to fiddle with some vacuum hoses and sure enough, they were in pretty bad shape. We had about 18" of hose from another project (cost about $1.50, I think--buy it off the bulk reel--about half the cost of an individual pack off the parts store rack), so he just replaced what he could get to easily and it made a huge difference. Starts like new and much smoother, though she still needs some tune-up type work. As someone elsewhere suggested, just do the hoses one at a time, cutting and fitting as you go--that way you won't get confused. No manual needed. There are, if memory serves, some plastic vacuum branches that might crack, so be very careful of them. If one just cracks or already has a crack, but is otherwise solid, something like JB Weld or epoxy putty should provide a temporary fix for the crack, until you can properly replace--maybe find a brass or stainless fitting to substitute (much more confidence inspiring than crappy plastic). The one thing that is universally terrible on this car are the plastic parts and fittings around lights and in the engine bay--they age and crack/crumble long before anything else even looks worn.

If you had an exhaust manifold gasket leak, you would hear it!! Leave that alone unless you KNOW that it is a problem.

A vacuum leak is any leak letting unmetered air into the intake manifold. Check the clamps on the air hoses yourself, not gorilla tight, just not able to turn the hose by hand.

Check the smaller hoses for cracks and softness. If the mechanic left the air intake hose loose, I wonder what else he didn't do.
