Tie Rod 850

I am replacing my driver side tie rod on my 1994 n/a 850. I have released it from the steering knuckle and used a press to push it out. Now I can't get it off the steering rack. Any suggestions? I sprayed WD 40 on it last night hopefully to loosen it up. The problem is the steering rack turns. How do I prevent that as I try to take off the tie rod.

Edwin

Put it back in the steering knuckle. When trying to break the tie rod end joint free, you'll have more leverage if that end is locked in position. Popping it out of the steering knuckle the second time will be easy.

On many cars, the actual tie rod that goes between the inner and outer tie rod end joints has flats to accommodate an open end wrench. Don't remember if this so for the 850 tie rod. If not, or if those flats are already rounded, I would use a Vise Grip or a pipe wrench to break free the threads.

Last time I did this on my 850, I had to cut the tie rod end joint off, so I know what you are dealing with. I try and stay away from using heat on suspension components, but that is another last chance option.

Are you in an area that uses a lot of winter salt?

Also, when putting this back together with the new joint, use anti-seize compound.

Something I did that you may want to do . . . I replaced the tie rod end joint locknut with a stainless steel version and I used a cooper crush gasket between the nut and the end joint to attempt a greater degree of sealing at that point. None of this may improve anything, but . . .

Thanks Ken. I ended up grinding it off. Also, the one I replaced it with doesn't utilize all the threads like the original? Have you had any luck with aftermarket? Its not an expensive part so reverting to original would be worth the expense if I'm going to have problems down the road.
