If its an NA (I think the turbo '95 is OBD only, but not sure) she should be able to read codes herself. She can also likely clear codes too that way. See here:

    http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/service/850/TroubleshootingWithCodes-NonTurbo.pdf

If its turbo it might not have the diagnostics, but have her check to see if its there anyway, because it will help. She can also go to a autoparts store and have them check/clear the codes, and write them down. I wouldn't recommend going to the mechanic until you know what you're going in for, and that its something she can't fix herself. Many codes can also just be reset without significant problems so she could drive it back to you, like around christmas break.. Some aren't a huge bother (like gross evap leak) if its leaking at the canister. Of course, some are but if she's not really experiencing issues, it might be easier to live with the light for a short while...

good call. thanks for the advise. i got all the missfire codes out of the A2. 451 452 453 454 455-- 542 543. May be the big coil wire. or the coil. I did notice some engine noise staring to come in the way of radio interferance. like a wireing through the speakers.

Thanks I hay drive down and swap volvo's so as not to worry when she comes home for Xmas break.

      Thanks again

LOL, the last time "I" got multiple misfires was because I ran out of gas. Fortunately, I was already coasting into a pump!

If you heard static on the radio, I would go for cap&rotor. A P&P sounds good to me also, just bring along a folding Torx tool. Grab a FPR relay (103) if there is one present, for the glovebox. Look for a shift position bulb? and other little stuff.

wow, all 5 cylinders with misfires...

Volvo's recommended order of determing cause of multiple misfires:

        Compression test
        Check coolant system for leaks
        Check spark plug wires
        Check distributor (cap AND rotor)
Ignition coil primary winding (ohmmeter between 1 and 15, .5-1.5 Ohms)
Ignition coil secondary winding (ohmmeter between 15 and output lead 8-9 Kilo Ohms
Start car (new plugs) and check voltage drop between 15 and ground, should be battery voltage.
then it gets fun: Power stage, flywheel speed, connectors, air leakage, oil level, fuel pump relay's two stage operation, fuel pressure..

If I were you, I'd stop at a pick'n'pull and snag a cap and rotor, plug wires (only because I've lost count of the times I see nice looking bougicords on the engine, and if you have to replace wires this saves you $75 or so), and the ignition coil. You'll probably be looking at 25-30 in parts from them, but I'd guess 90+% of the time its one of those things. I don't actually know how often you're supposed to replace the cap and rotor but the PO on mine did it every 2 years (at the dealer!) so I figure I'd use that interval.

Thanks. Change of plan. I'm driving down to Bloomington,IN with a new set of wires, cap and rotor and a known good coil and power stage. The last cap rotor and wires have 30k on them. thats not much, but who knows. I've seen the coil wire get bad on my 96 850.

The coil has a tick to it while running???? tick tick tick. before she left on Thanksgiving, I heard radio noise in the subwolfer that I installed years ago. Kind of tells me the wires cap or rotor were going.

Sure enought the frickin car waits until it's 280 miles away to throw a code.

          Thank again, tmannian

Probaly should rename the thread here, as you have given some great info.

Have your daughter stop by an auto parts store to get a free code reading. They could also reccomend a good Volvo indie.

Just do not let your daughter drop off the car and say 'fix it'.
