Hello, A website you might find interesting is "Bobistheoilguy.com".
Anybody who drives a car REALLY SHOULD monitor oil level and tire pressure. A friend's daughter drove her car (purchased by her parents) with the oil light on and destroyed her engine. Surprising for a college graduate.
The rate of oil consumption in a particular car can change with type, brand and weight. It might not change a lick. The old saying about 1 quart/1,000 miles being acceptable in a well running engine is still around because anything you could do to reduce that level of consumption, if anything, would cost too much.
I maintain two turbocharged vehicles. I use a synthetic with an ACEA rating of A3/B3. I read that the package of additives used in these oils is tailored to turbos-the bearings specifically. Castrol Syntech and Mobil 1 both in 0-30 weight "European formula" are the oils I use. Both cars will use ~1/2 quart of oil through the 5,000 mile oil change interval. Turbos run hot and dirty up the oil much faster than non-turbo engines.
In the absence of oil analysis, aka real data, I'd choose an A3/B3 synthetic were I in your shoes. Synthetics help maintain clean PCV systems in these cars. I'd rule out dino oil for that reason alone.
Don't let your daughter fry the engine. Kira
