Check Engine Light again. S70 1998

Well, my "CE" light is on again. It's been coming on since I bought the car new, the first time being at 1500 miles. The code is usually 611 or 612, which are the mystery codes indicating a leak in the fuel vapor recovery system. The dealer keeps changing parts, but nothing really helps. I was even given a VIP plan in an attempt by VCNA to shut me up, but the light keeps coming on, so I keep bringing the car in. I am on first name basis with the service manager and he recognizes me when I call without introduction (he is an agreeable guy who helped me get the extended warranty out of Volvo for my continued trouble). The fact is that I love the car and don't want to get rid of it, but the CE light on means inspection failure and I really don't want to have to ignore it in case there is a real code there. I guess I am just looking to comisurate with like owners and I realize that there is nothing much I can do... My current working theory is that the test that the car pefrorms on the fuel recovery system periodically is flawed and often produces a "FALSE" failure. It's either that or the parts the dealer keeps changing are defective (over a half dozen check valves, a rollover valve, several charcoal canisters, pressure sensor, the list goes on of what was replaced due to this problem). The good thing is that the dealer is very close to my house and I always get a curtesy car (| drove many new Volvos including the '01 XC and S80 T6 bith outstanding cars, but the XC is more to my liking).

Thanks for listening.

Re: Check Engine Light again. S70 1998

I feel your pain...I had my '99 S70 for 1 whole month before the CE light came on for the first time. It has been on many times since. My service manager knows me so well, he can fill out the paperwork for the loaner car for me! I think Volvo knows there are problems with this car, but cannot quite pinpoint what they are, so, in attempts to keep us happy, they are replacing any part they think might be the problem. I have had many of the same parts replaced that you have had replaced, and for some reason, the CE light keeps coming back on. I hope they figure it out...

Melissa, I just talked to someone in the srvice dept yesterday as my car is there now for... you guessed it - the CE light and the fault code 611. This time, however, the tech found something interesting. He took the gas cap off and re-ran the test and instead of 601 (I think this is the one for the large vaccum leak) he got a 611, which he thinks is wrong. So, although they are not finished with the car, at least they have a lead on a possible bug in software or an electric problem (an intermittent short some where that causes the pressure sensor to misbehave). They are not sure yet, but at least they are looking instead of replacing various system components to no avail.

      I'll keep the board posted.
