Code P1017 Engine control module (ECM), internal fault, Faulty signal??? V70-XC70 1999

I have a P1017 code on my 1999 V70.

This is what I found on the web as a reference:
P1017 = ECM - 900E Engine control module (ECM), internal fault, Faulty signal

What is the cause? Is the ECM the cars computer, or is this code related to the throttle body?

I have a PPC from BSR go to www.ppc-diagnostic.com it reads 38 modules on my XC70. Be sure to write down all the faults because it resets everything in one shot. Great tool I think it was just over $200.00
P.S. if you own a newer Volvo you Will be using a scanner believe me.

They just don't make them like they used to.

This scanner is almost the same as the one used a dealerships. Great for Indy shops! It returns the Volvo codes for every electronic system in the car, including seats and SRS.

This product used to be sold for just under $300 a couple of years ago. If you can find it on Ebay for a reasonable price, great!

I have purchased a total of 4 scanners in an effort to find one that will read the Volvo codes. Finally, I found one on EBAY from a place called "beat the garage" in the UK. It is the best I have used without spending several thousand dollars for the VADIS/DICE system. The big tipoff was that when you plug it in, you have to enter the volvo model, year and engine before it will link. I know it will reset the airbag service light on S80 which I thought was a dealer only item. It reads all codes and tells you in english. If I remember correctly, it cost about $350

I hate the P1nnn codes. This could be anything that sends a signal to the cars main computer. You won't like me for saying this, but you should get the codes read with a Volvo scanner, one that shows the Volvo codes. Either a dealer or a good Indie.

What is the most cost effective way to buy a Volvo scanner? On ebay I see a bunch of ODBII cables that terminate on the other end to a serial or USB end that you plug into a laptop. Does anyone know if this setup with the software will reveal true Volvo codes, or is this simply the same as my ODBII reader? It looks like the cheapest Volvo scanners are around $400? Anyone have any input?

I wouldnt mind owning a scanner, as the Vovlo dealers in my area are less than stellar when it comes to things like asking them to read a code. They will do it, but the minimum they charge is 1/2 hour labor, and you are LOW priority.

The Volvo indies are not close enough to make it practical for me for a code read.
