Question for you. Long round silver thing next to vacuum tree. S70 1998

This is something I don't have the courage to unplug. It is under the black protective cover with the throttle body.

There is a rubber pipe extending out of the top of the vacuum tree. half inch in diameter. Leads to a silver round thing about 2" dia and 5" long with a connector on one end. There is a second pipe that loops around and seems to T into the air intake pipe at the throttle body.

What's that thing? Has an electrical connector on it.

BTW. The half-inch diameter pipes seemed in good shape on this 1998.

Yep. Plug that into Google and that's what I'm looking at.

I regret questioning if these cars had them. Now it makes sense.

      Anyone see one fail?

The rubber hoses look like they have a year or two or three left on them.

Define fail. If its stop working completely, that's not too common, these things are robust suckers. Usually its just that they gunk up so much that they are barely doing their job. Pull it off and spray some brake or throttle body cleaner in it a few times and get a lot of it out. When its working it makes an audible humming sound, similar to what the power steering pump puts out.

Many thanks. I hope its part of scheduled maintenance at the dealer.

RPM seems to vary at idle correctly and if it was sticking or slow, the engine should stall out more often than once. B-)

I mistakenly assumed this function was taken care of by modulating the fuel injectors or spark timing.

The IAC motor is NEVER serviced at the dealer. That is how reliable they are. But, after 105K miles they do get a lot of carbon build up and a good soaking with throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush makes a world of difference.
