New S60 owner--PM tips? S60 2002

Hiya,

After several months without a Volvo for the first time ever, I finally purchased a 120k mile young S60 T5 with Geartronic!

This is my first FWD Volvo; it's replacing my '87 760 Turbo. I'm very happy with the car so far. It's surprisingly quick, exceptionally comfortable and well-appointed, and all the electronics work. I keep finding excuses to go out and drive.

It seems to have been well-maintained (it was a trade-in at a local dealer): hoses are supple, belt is tight and shiny, everything sounds and drives nicely.

However, I'm getting the "shift-flare" issue I've read a lot about.

Does anybody have a good guide for a total tranny flush/fill? I've seen lots of advice, but no step-by-step how-to.

Also, does anybody here have experience doing the IPD B4 cover replacement? If so, anything in particular to look out for while doing the job? About how long should it take?

While I'm under there, are there any specific things I should look out for on a car this year/mileage?

Any other specific preventive maintenance tips or advice?

Thanks, Brickboard! I look forward to spending more time here...again. :)

IPD's new web site is great! For flushing: http://www.ipdusa.com/products/4808/t7072-automatic-transmission-flush-hose-kit

Just get a clear plastic hose to fit over the end of the cars lower tranny hose and rout the drain to a gallon milk jug, marked at the 2quart level. Start the engine and pump out only 2 quarts. Add 2 quarts to the tranny dipstick hole and repeat until fluid is clean. Pumping out more than 2 quarts will produce bubbles and mess up the tranny pump. The entire operation takes 30 minutes or so, mostly waiting for the 3309 fluid added through the dipstick hole!

As for the B4 valve, doesn't look too hard. I would like to see pictures of someone lying on their back with their arms always in the wrong position :>) The tip for using a spare 10mm bolt looks great.

A lot of 3309 shouldn't come out, but let it drip/pour into a container to measure it.

Toyota sells 3309 fluid at a reasonable price, they use the same tranny. You will need at least 10 quarts for a good flush.

Thanks for the step-by-step! It sounds exactly the same as every other flush/fill I've ever done.

No maintenance records on the car, so who knows when the transmission was last serviced. First gear makes a whining noise, which I'm a little concerned about, but it shifts really smooth and strong throughout all gears (except for the shift flare thing)...hopefully a flush/fill and B4 replacement will ease my concerns.

I just did flush on my S60 but ran it through the top hose. The fluid will come out through the radiator and that is where you would push your hose into. This is the actual ViDA instruction to flush the tranny. It is easier this way than to use the lower line.
On another note, I would also replace the fuel filer.
