Seat Belts? Available? 850 1995

The drivers seat belt on the 855T has locked up. Last night I pulled it out and it kept locking every few inches. If I pulled it very slowly I heard a ratcheting sound. I let it return completely into the side pillar and now it's locked there.

Broken? Repairable? I've had the belt mechanisms out on my 740 and know they can be finicky unless held in the correct position.

How does the B pillar interior trim come off? Snap off? Are seat belts a dealer only item?

Don't really want to use a U-Pull-it part here.

Time to replace my wife's 945T drivers side belt too. It won't retract fully and lots of slack just lays in the seat.

Thanks,

Erwin in Memphis

Nothing wrong with a Pick&pull seatbelt, unless it has the pretensioner. Just check that it locks if you snap the belt forward.

Removal is a pain. The plastic clips tend to break. I forgot if you need to lift the plastic up from the top of the windows, it's been a long time.

Please repalace your 940 belt, it isn't safe.

One thing I left out. I had the windows opened 2" and the sunroof in the vent position when a heavy rainstorm came through. There was some water on the center console and rain could have come in through the window and into the seat belt slot at the base of the seat. Anything in either place that could have been affected by water and cause the belt to lock?

There wasn't a lot of water on the console, a dozen drops or so on the switches which I toweled off.

Going to have to rig up a fake belt to fool the LEOs until I get to the U-Pull-It this week.

Water is not a problem. It is a little piece of spring metal that fell out of place and keeps the belt from unlocking. It is possible to put the spring back in place, but that is temporary and dangerous.

Thanks. I'm going to remove mine tonight, see what it takes for tools and precautions, then go to the salvage yard tomorrow morning.

About the pre-tensioner, was there a model year change in the part? I remember something in the '90s about excessive force on the original pre-tensioners? Depending on what is available, I'll match part numbers if possible.

Pictures to follow.

Ok, pulled one from a '95 850. Good shape, smooth, not fired. $5. With the seat positioned correctly you can have one out in 5 minutes. Amazing.

I'll be putting it in tomorrow as I'm working late tonight.

Question.

How do I clear a SRS light? Last night, after I pulled mine out and deemed it un-repairable but managed to make it work, sort of. They're not made to be disassembled, being staked and riveted together. I put it back in the car, connected the battery and started it. Forgot to plug the pyrotechnic connector back in and got the SRS light. When I put the salvage unit in I want to clear the light.

How?

Thanks,

Erwin

I love $5!! Just clear the codes in B-5 and the SRS will go away. Make sure the key is not on when connecting the wires.

So, was getting the plastic panels off the B pillar hard?
Did you find a belt for the 940?

Thanks Klaus. The plastic panels are a piece of cake for the 850. If you have side impact airbags you must be careful of the trigger located behind the electric seat control panel.

From the fully forward position, move the seat back about 1/3 of the way. You don't want the seat back even with the B pillar. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Grab the front edge of the seat side panel and give it a tug upward and it will come loose. Slide it back an inch or so and the rear will come free of the SIPS bar. You can't pull the panel too far back because of the wiring. Once clear of the seat, if you have side airbags (in the seat back) there will be an orange plastic device clipped into the seat side panel. Pop it loose and fit it over the airbag trigger. This will keep it from going off should you bump into it. Some 850s don't have side bags so disregard the above if that's the case.

The seat belt has a bolt running through the lower end at the seat. Remove the bolt and free the belt.

To get the B pillar cover off, a sharp blow with the heel of your hand to the panel near the upper door frame should dislodge it. If not you can reach fingers under the lower edge and work it until it pops free. There are two plastic guards, spacers or something, one black, one white, that slot into the upper end of the cover. Try not to tip it and you'll see where they are before they fall out.

At the rear of the belt assembly is the connector for the pyrotechnic tensioner. Pull it off. There are two bolts, one above and one below the retractor, and one torx screw securing the pyro tube. Remove them all and the unit comes out. The torx screw is tough to reach if you have the seat back in the way. At the salvage yard a pair of vice grips loosend it as I couldn't move the power seat. No battery.

Assemble in reverse.

As for the belt for wife's 945T, I found a perfect one but didn't have the tools with me to get the retractor out. It's located at the base of the B pillar and both the B pillar cover and the lower door opening trim must be removed. Got that done but the mounting bolt for the retractor is under the unit and larger than any socket I took today. It was 98 degrees at 8am, I didn't carry a lot of tools.

Going back for it too. Yes, $5. I'll snap a few pics when I replace mine tomorrow.

Still looking for the elusive non-rusted out turbo tail pipe.

Reconnect battery and as Klaus stated, clear any SRS light codes in B-5 and it's done. A $5 replacement belt courtesy of the local U-pull-it.
