Trailer wiring 850 1994

It seems that I've been voted the one to put a hitch and wiring onto my parents' 855T despite only knowing RWD Volvos. Because I want everything to be easily reversible (and idiot-proof), I asked them to look into the factory harness instead of using piggyback type connectors. Unfortunately, the dealer just called and told my father that the harness is long and involved and not a DIY item.

Maybe since we are on summer vacation with no real internet access, I haven't been able to find any good info about this. Has anyone done it? Is this true? Some things online seem to point to an easy plug-in in the cargo area.

If it *is* something that has to be run from the engine compartment, does anyone have any pics of such an endeavor? I have no problem digging into Volvos, but I am away from home with limited tools so if it is too much, I'll find a different solution.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I did this on my 855.

Pull up the floor where the spare tire is and, on the left side, there is module that distributes power to all of the rear lights.

Without cutting any wires, I was able to tap into various conductors in that module and come up with all of the signals necessary to get parking lights, turn signals and brake lights, without triggering the dash warning light.

The scheme required me to use two power diodes from Radio Shack, but it's been in-place for about 10 years with no problems.

If you can wait until this weekend, I'll pop the floor and take some photos.

Yes, there is a lead that goes from the battery to the left rear wheel well. You will need a torx to get the door sill panels up, to lift the carpet. A 10mm wrench to take off the hot lead on the battery.

The OEM wiring is quite expensive, but I don't think there is any splicing like the after markets.

Thanks for the quick response. So the only issue is the power lead? Apparently the parts guy made it seem like residing the whole car (an exaggeration, but...).

Aside from that, does it just plug into existing wiring for the individual signals?

        Call these guys:

        http://www.tascaparts.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=213668

And ask them. Quite honest and reasonably priced. Cheapest dealer around and probably better than FCP.

Oops. The dealer originally quoted $60 for the harness, which I thought was perfectly reasonable. Based on your post, I had them re-check. Yep, $199.xx. Ouch.

I guess that means I use the generic connector. Any tips for that? Is there a place that I can tap into to avoid dealing with the bulb out indicator all the time?
