Serpentine belt S70

Hi Everyone,

I have a 99 S70 GLT with 125,000 miles. I had the serpentine belt inspected at 90,000 miles and told it looked ok.

How often should i have it inspected and when should i have this replaced?

Andrew

Volvo guidelines say every 60K miles. The timing belt is 105K, probably earlier for your 1999 because of the tensioner failures in the early parts. I would imaging you got the belts changed at 70K or so. A sticker should be on the timing belt cover or computer box stating when the T belt was replaced.

Thank you Klaus,
I have not yet changed the serpentine belt so that is now on the hot list to change. The timing belt was changed at, 90k rather than the 105k just in case. I did get the sticker your talking about.
I also got a new tensioner too based on what i read here on the brickboard.

Check the service records, usually the S belt is changed with the T belt.

Ok, i am back now. Service records show the water pump, tensioner, and timing belt were done but the serpentine belt was deemed still good.

The milage is at 125,000 now with the same serpentine belt!!!!!!!
I guess i better change it now!?

Which means the S belt probably was probably changed at 60K or so. If you DIY, then take a pic of the belt so you will remember the routing.

Serpentine belt: Tool S70

Guessing you've replaced the belt by now, so for future reference of all interested:

I scrounged up a piece of 3/4" square steel (aluminum would be fine too) barstock and cut it to 1-1/8" long. This fits quite nicely (snug) into the tensioner, but still leaves enough sticking out to get an open end wrench on it. If you've tried, you know there isn't much room in there.

... BTW, I did have to grind down the 3/4" square stock slightly. It measures .746 square. Make sure you get 1/2" engagement into the tensioner receptacle, so that it won't slip out.

The tool is simple and works like a charm.

Next time, DIY. It only takes 20 minutes and you save the mechanic time to work on something important. As well as a few bucks.
