Thread: temperature vs shift quality in my 03 V70 N/A 5 speed automatic V70-XC70 2003

So, I bought this car with harsh (thump) down**** and 1-2 2-3 upshifts that would flare (rpm jump when the transmission goes to neutral momentarily before engaging to a higher gear).
Things that I've done so far are:

1) toyota IV transmission fluid change
2) B4 piston cover updated (because it's stupidly cheap and why not try it)
3) counters reset, adaptation reset, adaptive sequence done
4) installed transmission oil cooler from 2005 Toyota tundra that I found in JY (not very happy with how it's positioned right now; might have to re-position it for more air flow and/or add a dedicated fan).

When it's balmy 75 F or so and under its shifts smoothly on highway or in heavy stop and go traffic.
When it's 85 F and over it's fine for the first 30 minutes or so of in-town driving, but after that time runs out it starts flaring and hard downshifting with a clunk when stopping at the light, takes a while to go between gear at the take-off from the light (flaring), and so on.

Next in line could be valve body or a whole transmission, but I would like to hear your comments and ideas before going there.

Have you kept current with the dealer software updates? There are quite a few and at least one addresses this problem.

Adding an ATF cooler is not normally needed, unless trailering in hilly country. The current cooler as part of the radiator seems to work fine in 'normal' situations. Beware of being too cold in the winter time if you cooler does not have temperature sensative shut off valve.

I have seen a dramatic improvement after a fluid change and adding a cooler, which I could just bypass in winter.
I went to the dealer and their first response was very pessimistic, as they, basically, advised a new transmission, suggesting that valve body is a band aid.
I might try and visit them once more to see if the latest software has been uploaded or needs to be uploaded.
Another poster on swedespeed board indicated that the latest software seemingly fixed his problems that were identical to mine.
Thank you for giving good advice.
I really like the ride and the MPGs I'm getting in this car.
Despite being heavier compared to my-now-sold 95 850 n/a 5 speed it gets better MPGs. I guess the new technology (VVT valves and such) gives it some fuel economy boost :)
