Abnormal-- I had it happen with a '92 940T a while back-- the pump bearings were completely shot and if I ran the engine it would push power steering out the vent hole in the power steering reservoir.

I'd be inclined to take the serpentine belt off and assess the condition of the pump by turning it by hand and inspecting it for axial play.
