heater blower only operates on high speed 850 1997

Yesterday, the heater blower on my wagon began to act up. At first, the fan toggled on and off several times, then it quit altogether. I switched the blower speed from Auto to the high speed manual setting (ECC), and the fan came on.

The ECC appears to be working. When I started the car this morning, the blower came on after the engine warmed up sufficiently for the heater to produce hot air. However, the fan will still will not switch over to low speed operation.

Suggestions?

thanks in advance.

Neil

Let me add to my earlier message.

The fan works intermittently, and only on high speed. I just came back from a short trip in the car. When I started the engine, the lights by the temperature controls flashed for about 30 seconds. No heater fan at all.

Good thing it is a somewhat mild day today.

It could be a few things and being that you see those lights flashing, that means that there's fault codes stored in memory BUT in '97s, a scan tool is required to access those codes for further diagnostics.

I could try to speculate but that'd be pointless IMHO.

John

I was hoping it was straight forward, and that I could give some direction to my indie mechanic. The alternative is to take a day off from work to travel to the dealer and wait for the car. The nearest dealer is 1 1/2 hours away.

thanks

Neil
