No GO HELP! S40-V40 1998

Hi guys

I have a friend that has a 1998 S40 2 liter non turbo and he has the following problem. About 2 weeks ago, he did a long trip(300km), and when he stopped to buy some choclates, his car would not start again. After testing various things, like fuel (checked to see if fuel was getting to the injectors..), etc, and did not find any fault, the car started after 2 hours.

Now, it happended again, and the car had to be taken to the dealer, 400km from where he stays on a truck. The mechanic is also baffled as this is the second vehicle that has the same problem. The other being a V70 2001 model with 1000km on the clock. To get back to my friends car, the mechanic says that is seems as if there is no power at the ECU. What can you guys suggest. I'd like to help them.

Urgent!

Regards and thanks

Michél

Did he drive a long distance again?

    Could be heat related.

The mechanic may want to check the relay box connected to the shock tower. It houses most of the 'major' relays for system power, ignition power, etc. and if one of those is getting flakey... Or perhaps the wiring from the relay socket(s) has a problem.

Basic check of the power cables going to/from the battery? I think there's some junction where the '+' cable splits into 2 or 3. I had a 340 once where this part failed.

I think the ECU can log a power 'event', but I'm not sure.

Umm.. Just thought about this: immobilizer!

The mechanic may want to check the antenna ring around the ignition lock.. These do sometimes (randomly) fail on cars of all ages. Initial symptoms often include difficult starting.

    Pure guesswork here..

    Bye, Arno.

Well, we can almost say it's definitely an electrical problem. Was there any spark? Wouldn't the ECU suspend spark if it didn't have power?

Re: No GO HELP! S40-V40 1998

No ECU power pretty much kills all activity on the engine as it also provides the 'trigger' pulses to the 2 coils connected to the sparkplugs.

At least the S/V40's don't have a distributor anymore, so that's one less possible problem area. :-)

But no ECU power also means that the system relay fails somehow as it's fed power pretty directly to keep interference levels low.

Could perhaps still be a bad ignition switch?

        Bye, Arno.

          Hi guys

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, there is no spark. The engine turns, but thats about it..

          Regards

Re: No GO HELP! S40-V40 1998

Does this "mechanic" know anything about newer Volvos? Does he have a wiring diagram? If he knows it's got no spark, then it's usually diagnosed with the aid of an OEM Volvo wiring diagram to follow the voltage flow seeing what's not getting its voltage or signal.

If he doesn't know newer Volvos or have the proper "tools" (like a wiring diagram), I'd get the car out of there and to a dealer IF possible.
