Sudden increase of oil consuption S60 2001

Long time not at the forum, but here I am again. Still driving my nice S60 2.4 (non-turbo) 2001! (I still have to get used to the new model S60, we will see in about five years or so..)

Last year I noticed a sudden increase of oil consumption from an average of 1L on 10k kms to about 1L on 4000 kms and increasing to 1L 2500 kms.

There was a leak at the front crankshaft O-ring (the right side of the car). That was all fixed by the daler including the camshaft O-rings and everything is dry and fine now, except..the oil consumption is still about 1L/3000 kms (about 1/4 gl on 1875 mls)instead of my usual avarage of about 1L/10k kms (about 1/4 gl on 6250 mls.

Anyone an idea what could be the cause of this sudden increase of oil consumption?

Thanks!

Dutchman

Update oil consumption S60 2001

After all the repairs reported in my previous posts, the oil consumption is now 1L/6500 km (about 1/4G per 4100 miles). It is still not the figure I had before (1L/10000 km) but if it will stay like this, I am happy.

out of curiosity what type of oil are you using? brand/weight?

Update oil consumption S60 2001

The dealer uses 5W30 full synthetic from Esso (I think); I top off with Shell Ultra 5W30 (as a real Dutchman should..)

How many Kms on your engine? Leaking oil and consumption are very different. Is the PCV and the small vacuum line going to it clean? Too much crankcase pressure will force oil past the valve guides where it burns in the combustion chamber, to say nothing about blowing out seals and watching it drip out.

Are you a city/suburb driver or a country bumpkin? In other words, do you ever get the engine oil hot when commuting to work - hot enough to burn off the impurities? Do you use 'regular' oil or synthetic.

Have you checked the oil filler cap. The rubber gassket tends to get brittle and let oil leak out. About 1 looney to replace it.

Thanks Claus

- 180k kms now; at least once a week 150 km/day
- use full synthetic 0W/30 or 5W/30.

I had checked the carter ventilation by putting a latex handshoe over the oil fil openening: some air came (slowly) in the handshoe at 900 rpm.

To day I had the carter ventilation checked and cleaned by the dealer. A clamp around a tube was replaced. To night I repeated the test with the handshoe and indeed now it was sucking vacuum. And, indeed like you suggested the gasket at the oilfilter has been replaced

See if oil consumption is decreasing now.

Not having vacuum at engine idle will increase the fuel injection rate as well as cause the engine seals to unseat and leak. Using a glove (handshue)as a balloon is a good way to test pressure, but I prefer a vacuum gauge to be slightly more precise.

Learn how to unplug the PCV and clean it yourself, saving money rather than have the dealer do it. Besides, it is more satisfying when you do it.

Checked my owners guide and the spec calls for cleaning @ 120k miles... (for an 07) -I think that figure is rather high especially when the book also states dino oil at 7500 miles is okay too. I got a free weekend coming up so I think I will spend a few minutes and clean mine up before it gets too cold.

Fribblehead, I couldn't find PCV (Positive Carter Ventilation) cleaning in my (European) manual. But I think, it will be just checking/cleaning of the vacuum tubes, and not the complete system including the oil separator (?) (which I don't know what it means). I understood that for a full cleaning the inlet manyfold must be removed..

In my case it was an inexpensive (€ 55 €/$ 72) service by the dealer, so I gues it included only the vacuum tubes. Apparently the loose clamp caused leaking resulting the PCV not working properly.

I thing the "glove test" I metioned is a good lay man tool to check if the PCV is working more or less properly.

from what I dug up it seems that just the hoses need cleaning. I took a look at the hose that leads back into the intake tube preturbo and mine was clean as a whistle so there was nothing for me to clean up.

Did you take a look at the hoses at all by chance?
