98' V70 Transmission hesitation... V70-XC70

Purchased a 1998 V70 in November of 2010.

Flushed the transmission in July of 2011 at 127214 miles. Do not believe that I'm the first to change it, but then again one never knows with used cars. Fluid looked brown, but not black and did not smell burnt. Did not drop the pan, just flushed like I flush my 240.

Car appeared to run fine up until November 12, 2011.

Noticed that the car, when cold, would not reverse at all or very slowly to move and then going forward it was very sluggish and unresponsive.

Since then my wife, who is the normal driver has had several situations, like sitting at a light and waiting for it to turn or making a right hand turn on red where the car will either not move or start to move and then stop only to start back up again within a short amount of time.

So what is the consensus out here as to what is going on???

I read several posts or think I have about replacing the PNP or cleaning it and quite possibly there are bad solenoids in the transmission. The only question here is where is the PNP and solenoids that FCP sell located on the transmission??? I've looked in my Haynes manual and well, it is completely useless.

Your thoughts and suggestions are all welcome as I need to resolve this problem before my wife has an accident that is not her fault.

Best regards,

Matt

First, check the ATF level, twice. With the engine off and cold, pull out the dipstick - the level should be way over full. Then start the engine and check the level again, comparing the level on the 'cold' side of the dip stick. Low is not good. If you check the level with hot fluid, it should be a little over the 'max' reading.

A faulty PNP will turn on the CEL or the shift arrow. The 1998s seldom had a PNP problem, unlike the early 850's.

      Klaus,

      Thanks for your input.

I'll check this tonight once I move it into the garage when I get home.

Will that small amount of time running skew the results once the fluid settles down?

      Thanks in advance,

      Matt

The ATF fluid pump runs off the engine, so give it a few minutes for the ATF to drain back into the sump. Remember, checking the level of the ATF against the dipstick is normally done with the engine running and in neutral.

I only mentioned the level check with the engine off because a prior owner flushed the tranny and forgot to add the last 2 quarts??? Or he checked the level with the engine off, because the level was perfect for a cold engine reading on the dipstick WITH THE ENGINE OFF!

My car ran fine until it got cold out. Then the tranny made very strange noises and didn't want to go into gear until it warmed up.

          Klaus,

Finally had a look today at my wifes V70 transmission level.

Parked it last night in the garage so its level. Read the Hayne's manual this morning and performed the verification according to there procedure and here are the results:

Before starting car, I checked the level of the fluid and it was below the minimum for a cold engine.

Started the car and ran it through each gear and then back to park. I then waited 2 minutes and checked the level. Nothing on the stick.

I then added a half a quart of transmission fluid and ran the procedure again.

It was really hard to tell if I got anything as the fluid was still running down the sides of the dipstick.

I then added a quarter of a quart of transmission fluid, and ran the test again.

I still couldn't tell, so I shut the car off and left it sit for about 4 hours as I had other things to attend to.

Once I looked at it again, I checked the stick before starting the car and now found the cold level to be at the top of the cold level even though I had not run it yet.

I ran through the procedures and this time I did not get anything on the stick for a cold engine. I'm feeling horrible at this point. I now add the remainder of the quart and am unable to get a reliable reading so I'm shutting off the car and will wait until after dinner to check it out again.

          Any thoughts while I wait???

Could it be that after the flush I still needed to add in an additional 2 quarts and that I still need to add one more??? I do not haven anymore on hand at the moment so it will have to wait until Monday.

          Regards,

          Matt

When the car is cold and all of the ATF flows to the sump, the dip stick level will show way overfull on the hot side.

You are still at least low on fluid if at idle and cold, the ATF is not up to the max on the cold side. The car should at least run now, engage gears even when cold.

The 9 quarts of ATF does expand a lot when hot, which is why the 2 readings on the dip stick. It is possible that the pump got air and cavitated which caused the loss of pressure and no more forward motion or shift to 1st.

            Buy another bottle of ATF...

When HOT, the level will show slightly more than full on the hot side, but not a big deal.

              Klaus,

Thanks for your post here! I now know for future reference what I should be looking for on the stick when I change the oil again.

              The wife thanks you too!

              Regards,

              Matt
