850R Problem After Ecm Removal And Replacement 850 1996

To try to identify the ECM I removed it from its container, photographed the labels and replaced it.

When I try to start the engine, I turn the ignition key to the first stop, all the dash warning lights illuminate as normal, the ABS/TRACS lights go out after they pass the initial test, again as usual. Then, as I turn the key further, nothing happens. There is no attempt to engage the starter. The battery is not flat. The trip computer still has all the data it had before the removal.

Now for the mea culpa: I didn't disconnect the battery during the removal/replacement.

Before I do anything else like disconnect the negative battery lead for 15 minutes, is there anything else I can try? Could I have damaged the ECM?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply KlausC.
Once the initial panic subsided, I removed the ECU again to see if I bent any pins and found I hadn't.
I re-seated the ECU locked it in place and he started and runs perfectly.
Go figure!

850R Problem After Ecm Removal And Replacement 850 1996

There is only one stipulation if the battery is still connected while removing the ECM and that is after turning the ignition key off 240 seconds must elapse before removing it, to allow the electrical discharge.

Hope this helps for next time?

Keith

Someone else may yell at you, but not me. I have also removed the ECU with the battery connected and not had a problem. If there were a problem, the ECU would not have turned off the extra lights.

I suspect that your problem may just be an ignition switch problem. Or a battery lead to the starter problem.

Klaus
