855 Jacking Points 850 1997

Getting ready to do my first 140,000 mile service. I've done several timing belts on my three 240's. I bought and will use IPD's cam locking tool.

From what I have read, I'm safe to jack up the front of the 855 on the front cross member just behind the radiator, using my 3 ton floor jack and a 2x4 to spread the weight load a little and protect the cross member.

I have 4 ton jack stands that I will place on the cradle, just behind the front wheels to support the front end. The e-brake will be set and the rear wheels will be chocked.

Any tips are much appreciated....

Make a beer run before you start.

You won't need both front wheels off the ground, just the right front. So, jack the car up using the subframe, then place the jack stand in the appropriate place.

Before you jack up the car, loosen the lug nuts a little. Remove the S belt and shroud over the T belt. Pull the spark plugs and count the teeth in the T belt between the two cams - easier than guessing after the new belt goes on. With the plugs out, turning the crank gets much easier!

I use a set of needle nose vice grips to hold the fender flap open.

You probably only need to replace the belts and the tensioner roller. Inspect the water pump bearings by trying to wiggle the shaft side to side with your fingers. Make sure that there is no dried antifreeze on the block. With good antifreeze maintenance, the pump should easily last to your next Tbelt change.

    Good luck,

    Klaus

855 Jacking Points - Thanks for Your Help 850 1997

      Klaus,

I did end up raising the front end, as i drained the coolant in preparation for replacing the water pump. Floor jack under the subframe in front of the radiator and jackstands on the subframe just in back of the front wheels.

T-Belt + water pump was very straight forward. I'm glad I had the IPD tool for locking the cams. I was unsure of the PO's maintenance, so I replaced the tensioner and roller. I'll sleep better knowing those items were done.

I'm really enjoying this 855T. Thanks for your assistance.
