850 dash removal 850

I recently pulled the entire dash from my 850 to do the dreaded ac evaporator replacement. A couple of the front mounts holding the dash to the firewall busted during removal - the screws mount from under the cowl on the wiper motor to the plastic tabs on the interior dash.

Now I found a '97 850 turbo, from which I removed the dash top pad (not the entire dash) and it looks like i can maybe remove the top frame of the dash to get the piece that has the screw mounts, without pulling the whole dash. Anyone have an idea if this will work, or do I need to pull the entire dash board? I'm also assuming that all 850's have same dash components that are inter-changable - can someone confirm that also?

thanks - appreciate the help....pulling out and installing dashboards is my least favorite car project

Be sure to add the cabin filter if you 850 does not have one. After doing the same job twice I found that this prevents the leaves and stuff from getting into the ac part and causing the problem. It is reached later after the job from the engine side and should be replaced every 30k or so

    C,

Nope. Have to pull the entire dash out.

Great write-up on Matthew's Volvo Site.

Been there--done that. IMO the reason that the mounts break is that the felt compresses over time and no longer provides shock absorption. Truck like ride + rigid ABS plastic set on metal firewall + temp extremes = broken mounts.

Best fix is to remold with a product called PlastiMend. This is an ABS + MEK solution that chemically fuses the pieces together.

Then, use a high density THIN foam under the felt to provide shock absorption. I used the stuff that goes between a truck bed and camper top. There are 4 contact areas stamped into the firewall where you apply the foam.

Let me know if you need more information or assistance.

      thanks guys.

yes, problem is two of the mounts broke off - I still have them, but didnt think I could securely glue them back on, but sounds like I can use that fusing material. dosent seem I could fabricate them..unless I mounted some sheet metal to the dash and drilled pilot holes for some sheet metal screws.

If you can give me some more info on the plastic bonding material - like where to source it - that sounds like a good first try as i can just pull the dash forward and try to repair, without a complete removal.

        C,

        Go to www.plasti-mend.com.

Since you've removed the dash before you know what's involved. Also, the 850 dash may be different from the S70 unit.

But, my experience was that tilting the dash did not provide me enough room. I took it out and set it on boards covered with an exercise mat on top of the wheeled garbage container. So, I could roll it outside to work on it and move it in overnight.

3 of the mounts were broken as well as several other fasteners and receivers, probably from years of bouncing around. It took me over a week to repair and remold the damaged areas.

    All 850 dashes are equal.

The mounts are through the firewall, IIRC, and they are plastic screws? Why not fabricate some metal mounts using a bit of foam to keep down the rattles?

If you take off the firewall screws, the donor dash should come backward enough for you to get the mounts.
