can an OBDII code scan mess up my ECM? V70-XC70 2000

I had some folks at AutoZone check the codes on my car (nothing came up) since my TRACS/ABS lights are on but since that point the car has been running lousy after warmed up. Could anything have been the cause of that just from reading codes, since nothing was changed on the car from that point on.

    Reading codes will NEVER mess things up, however, erasing codes will cause the system to recalibrate and go through drivability relearning.

    Depending on the code reader, some cannot read ABS codes. I suggest going to another autoparts store - my local O'Reilly loans them out for parking lot use so that I can scan and erase. California residents find this practice illegal.

      It would certainly seem like he did not do anything but read codes, but this is all too coincidental. He read the codes and nothing came up, so it's doubly weird but I always go back, detective-like, to see what occurred just before the ailment and this is what came up.

        Hello, Drive your car back to a state of "readyness" and see if it smooths out. If it does, open your gas cap with the engine running, generate another code then return to the store and borrow the reader again and see if the symptoms return. Kira

          I'd love to drive it again in a state of readiness, but it's not happening at the moment. The car still misfires when warm. With luck, I can drive about 10 miles before this happens, but I'm wary of driving it at all now.

          Right now, I'm waiting to return the car to "normal" with a software flash and then I'll go from there.

          Regardless, I appreciate feedback.

            If you have a multimeter, check the engine coolant temp sensor for proper resistance. If the engine starts nicely and then balks after warm up, it could be the ECT sensor.

            Resistance is linear:

            68F = 2800 Ohms
            104F = 1200 Ohms
            212F = 150 Ohms

            Note, do not uplug/plugin when engine is running - it will cause another error.

    I've had something similar with my 2000 V70-- after reading codes and clearing the CEL I've had occasional hard starts and/or rough running for a while. It happened after having codes read while in the US (parts stores don't read codes for free here in the Toronto area) and since I got my own Autel 509 code reader.

      Herb, did your code reader solve the issue?

      After careful thought, I strongly suspect this to be my problem.

      I read codes with my cheapo meter and have not noticed any problems but when I took the car to the dealer for a new key programming, the guy said that my software was all messed up and that he needs 70 minutes to re-program. I can't say for sure there's any link. Lucky it was a set cost of $72 to program the key.......rip off
