Throttle Control Unit Replacement?-Surging 850 1993

Several people have mentioned replacing the throttle control unit to fix the surging RPM's between 30 and 50 mph. I would like to do this repair, but I am uncertain what part your are referring to. My haynes manual lists a throttle position sensor, which is a small sensor attached to the throttle shaft. This part is suppost to send a signal to the fuel and ignition system ECU's to control throttle opening.

I also have a listing for an idle air control valve which is a small electric motor that controls the idle speed when the throttle is closed. This larger silver part is cone shaped and located under the throttle housing several inches from the throttle shaft.

I would like to do this in the next few days. Any help?

Thanks,

JOHN F

    Re: Throttle Control Unit Replacement?-Surging 850 1993

Your posting is interesting. It's the first posting that is similar to the problem that I am having. Except my problem is the exact opposite. Cruising between 45 and 60 mph, my enigne will momentarily shut off. After several seconds the rpms and throttle control will come right back. This probelm seems to be greater when the gas level is low. I initially thought it was the fuel pump (either one of them) but recent ly replaced the TPS.

Not having the same amount of trouble but the prblem is still there.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

    DW

The throttle position sensor sends signal to ECU regarding throttle opening, not to control throttle opening. Driver controls throttle opening with gas pedal. 1993 does not have a throttle control unit. this is part of the drive by wire on 99 and newer cars.
