starting issues 850 1995

Wifes 855 having trouble starting. New Battery, Recently tuned up, plugs, wires, rotor cap. MDS coil. Fuel pump replaced 5 years ago. New O2 sensors 2 years ago. New ignition switch a couple years ago. All OEM parts, except MDS coil. Thinking its either catalytic converter?? or possible fuel relay. Starter turns engine over fine, no corrosion on any maIn connections. Any thoughts? I have not checked for rattle or temp differential before and after cat, but plan on that this weekend. No check engine light and just passed CA Smog test.

Just went thru this on my 93 940. You probably should check fuel pressure to be sure. I'n not sure what the fuel pump set up is on an 850, but you need the right pressure for these things to start right. This assumes relay is working properly. Mike

Try starting the engine and then pull one of the spark plugs and see if it is wet with fuel. Or push on the schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail to see if you have fuel pressure - remember to cover the valve with a rag in case there is pressure.

The fuel pump relay usually fails when the temperature increases, not getting colder. But it is easy to check. Just pull the #103 relay under the fuse tray and jumper 15 and 87, turn the key to position II, and listen for the fuel pump running - it should. If not, it could be the fuel pump itself.

Fuel delivery failure will not set any codes.
