Klaus, thanks for the suggestion to remove the dipstick tube. The tube did not want to come out easily after removing the mounting screw, so while I was debating this, your comment about the broken part of the dipstick most likely being in the bottom of the tube gave me an idea. Suction. I hooked up my shopvac with a smaller diameter hose and held it over the end of the dipstick. After a about 30 seconds I could see the telltale yellow of the end of the dipstick almost at the top of the tube. I suspect it "rode" up on the transmission fluid that was being sucked out. I was able to take a pick tool and slide the broken piece out of the dipstick. The piece was long enough it probably would not have flexed enough to get into the pan, but I feel much better with it out. Now I need to order a new dipstick. Thanks!
