Replace CV boot w/o removing the joint 850 1995

I hope that someone might be able help me out with this question.

Not too long ago I remember seeing a post about a replacement CV boot that doesn't require removal of the joint. This is something that I would consider doing as one one of my driver's side boots on my car is looking old but the joint is still fine. Thinking this would buy me some more time before replacement. I'm concerned that winter driving might do it in. I would rather not replace one during a New England winter!

Thx,
J

I've done my front outer boots a couple of times. It's not too bad a job but a little messey cleaning up all the grease. It's been a while but I think if you unbolt the sway bar and the A-arm mounting bolts along with taking the axle nut off you should be able to pull the hub out a swing it out of the way. Have some supports for the axle handy. Some snap-ring pliers are a must. Klaus is right though they really don't seem to last too long.

What happens to the rubber/vinyl boots is that they eventually dry out and crack. If your boot is not cracked, you could try some vinyl conditioner on it to get through the winter. Just apply it liberally on the entire boot while looking for very deep cracks. Do both sides of the car.

As for replacing the boot, yes those products do exist. But they only last a year or two, depending on the climate and the installer. Considering the cost of the boot and an entire new axle, I would always go for a new axle.

BTW, if a boot is torn open, it usually takes a good year for the joint to get to the point when replacement is mandatory. You will hear the noise long before failure.
