1998 V70 defrost air velocity is too low V70-XC70

I have been test driving a 1998 V70 with MCC climate control and it seems OK except for low air velocity when in defrost mode. The defrost outlets span the entire width of the dashboard at the base of the windshield. Even at max fan speed, the defrost air velocity is perhaps 1/4 - 1/2 of the defrost air velocity in my 1994 940 wagon. I dont think the defrost air velocity in this V70 will be sufficient to keep the windshield clear when outside air temp is below freezing.

The cabin air inlet filter is new. Air velocity from the dash vents and floor heat outlets is fine when the air control is in the appropriate position. Only the defrost outlet velocity seems low, and it doesnt matter if the MCC is set to recirculate mode or fresh air mode. Is low defrost air velocity normal in these cars ?

Thanks,

Mike

It could be as simple as a cable binding so that the damper is not completely shut. Turn the blower on high and feel if there is air coming out of the dash vents or the heater vents while in defrost mode.

I have had the same problem with my '98 S70, have just lived with it, assuming it was related to the evaporator (still original). I don't want to remove the dash!

There is only one reason to remove the entire dash, repl the evaporator.

To check the vent positions only requires removing the kick panels and glove box. Note, the 1998+ cars need to remove the glove box to gain access to the screws that hold the kick panel up.

I checked another 1998 V70 (XC AWD with ECC instead of MCC) and it has the same air velocity coming out of the defrost outlets.

On the V70 I am test driving, the airbox doors all seem to work correctly. In the defrost only position there is very little air coming out of any outlets other than the defrost.

My conclusion is that the V70 has less defrost air velocity than the 940 cars. Outside temperature dropped into the 20's this weekend and defrost on the V70 was acceptable but not as good as a 940.

          Thanks,

          Mike
