ECM Performance Upgrades - Intriguing! Anyone, IPD versus PES or Other?? 850 1995

If and when the markets ever rebound and I have some extra "play" money I might want to add a little more fun to my 850 turbo.

As i understand it, with PES you send them your ECM and they modify it and mail it back to you (hence your out of a car for at least a few days).

With IPD , they send you a modified ECM and you mail back yours.

The IPD unit cost $980 and the PES modifid ECM about $600 something.

Anyone have pros and cons on either unit (other than price) ?

Is one superior to the other?

Any problem with the check engine light coming on?

Any problem passing emmissions testing?

Also, I realize the modified ECM should be used in conjunction with a performance cat back exhaust system.

    Hi Nathan,

I am going through the same thing right now.

I can tell you that the I.P.D. chip is far superior.

The pes chip does not account for the transmission and other operations

and the car will think that it is having a failure some where

when you get the ipd chip you get two (hence the price difference)

but it is much better for your car.

read the info on the T.M.E. website

    That is ipd in sweden

...I concur with "derspi". The Wetterauer Chip is wonderful, AND You get it back. So...if You Ever want to run the original...it's There! I have had Zero problems AND the Results Are Superior. IPD Seems to be an Overpriced company, They offer One-Stop Shopping but You Pay for IT! They seem to have the attutide that since You have a Volvo, You should "Bend Over". "Just My opinion, Folks"! Bye.

With IPD you pay a $1000 core charge that you get back when you

return yours. So, you could keep the OEM one if the market

    does really well :)

I believe IPD's units are certified and legal (as far as pollution

    laws are concerned).

Re: ECM Performance Upgrades - Intriguing! Anyone, IPD versus PES or Other?? 850 1995

I think with all the ECU tuners you'll have to send in your ECU unit for them to modify then they ship it back to you ASAP (so yes, you will be without a running car for those few days). Unsure about IPD though because they charge you a "core-charge" for the actual ECU unit first, then ask that you return them your stock ECU out of your car--check with them or someone who has actually dealt with them.

I had my ECU re-chipped by Wetterauer and the whole process took 3 days in total. It was simple and the car started without a hitch, no check engine light and I've had no engine-related problems thus far in 2 years of driving with the modified ECU. The car has also passed all annual smog checks thrown at it. The reason I chose Wetterauer was because after they modify your ECU, they return your original stock ECU program on a chip and it is actually re-usable.

And yes, you should get a freer-flowing cat-back exhaust when you get your ECU reprogrammed. But you don't have to get the expensive ready-to-bolt on ones that cost an arm and a leg. Just source a good free-flowing universal muffler that will fit your car and have a good muffler shop fabricate and install the rest--you even get to choose what type of exhaust pipe material if you go this way.

Did you replace your cat and muffler? Which ones did you use? Does the muffler work on sound absorption or does it uses baffles to "cancel" out the sound? I've wanted to upgrade the exhaust, but am concerned about the exhaust note being too loud. Any advice would be welcome. THanks.

Oops, forgot this: The muffler I got is made by OBX and it is a straight through design. OBX makes mufflers, racing seats and other assorted car parts for the aftermarket. They have a nice selection of universal free-flow mufflers to choose from with a range of different inlet and outlet sizes to suit your needs. Well priced too.

Re: ECM Performance Upgrades - Intriguing! Anyone, IPD versus PES or Other?? 850 1995

I'm still running the stock cat but have thought about replacing it with a free-flowing one from Random Technologies. I've held off on that upgrade for now seeing that it might set off a check engine light and the gains do not seem to be huge considering the cost and the possibility of added noise. But if you are concerned with exhaust noise, I'd recommend against swapping out the stock cat for an aftermarket one--the stock cat acts as a good silencer in itself.

Oh and don't worry about the whole "sound absorption" thing, most if not all aftermarket free-flow exhausts rely on resonators to silence the exhaust note. If, after installing your exhaust, you still think it is too loud then ask the muffler shop to just add another resonator. Initially, on my car, the muffler shop put in one large resonator and I complained that it was too loud. So the following week, I brought it back in and they redid the entire thing for me for free and instead of just one big resonator they managed to squeeze in two smaller ones and now I'm comfortable with the noise level. To be totally honest, I really think the IPD exhaust is a bit overpriced--my total outlay for my custom exhaust including labour & taxes was around $600 Canadian (about $400 US)--huge savings!

Hey guys- did not get a response over the week end on this one, so here goes again:
