I recently purchased a V70 with a tailgate that won't open. It does not have a manual lock on the tailgate. I checked the fuse and it is good. The remote is missing but when my son toggles the unlock button on the driver's door I can hear it actuating. I have tried the push/pull method with no luck. Is there a way to reach the lock mechanism by peeling back the interior tailgate panel? Regarding the missing door remotes, what is the method for programming one if I purchase one off Ebay?

I had the same problem on our '03 V70. After jiggling the lock button on drivers door and someone holding the outside button on the tailgate, the tailgate finally opened. Tried replacing the master lock actuator in drivers door, lock actuator in the tailgate, checked all the wiring, all to no avail. Finally replaced the tailgate actuator relay and this turned out to be the problem. Since there is no inside latch on the tailgate and no way to unlock and open the tailgate manually, I installed a little pull chain on the inside to open the tailgate. As far as a remote, I purchased one from Volvo, and it had to be programmed by the Volvo dealer on their computer to work. (Quite expensive, $179.50 plus $125.00 to program it).
