DRL / Daytime running lights 850

I'm still looking around at options for my 850 and today I looked
at the spot low on the bumper where the fog lights must mount, that spot
might be good for fog lights but it's too low for DRL and the plastic there
isn't great to provide a sturdy mount for lights.
Then I was wondering if the trim beneath the headlight assembly comes out
without breaking chintzy mounting tabs etc., since that would be a good place for
DRL. Then I found this option:

http://www.ztechid.com/xenon/Audi-Style-LED-Strip-Daytime-Running-Light-p-22299.html

Cement-on flexible LED strips, a pair of 12 5050 SMD LED strips that can be glued on. The good news is they draw only .007Amp or 7ma. The downside is that they
have lower lumen output. $21.24 shipped
This same company, ztechid is partners with amazon.om, and newegg, with all kinds of DRL packages available that include high power LEDs 1 watt LEDs that would be
likely over ten times brighter and better for daytime visibility.
There's a package for the Volvo XC60 that might work under the 850 headlights.
Look at the assortment of options and prices here:

You can use the cars own lights by turning the small screw in the lower right corner of the light switch cover.

Hiya Fixit,

I don't have that screw in my head light switch
I see it in the user manual, and apparently it's only for USA cars.
Maybe mine was made out of the USA, how do I find out?

Bill

It's not really a screw, it is a switch that is pushed in and turned to the desired setting.

If yours doesn't have it, then the junk yards are full of them. The Canadian models didn't have them, perhaps the prior owner was taking a trip to Montreal and the switch died and needed to be replaced?? The rear electrical socket is the same.

Only 850 switches, the 1998 and up are different.

The beauty of LEDs is that they draw way less current, less alternator drag.

I believe what B.B. wants to do is have 'real' daytime running lights, not headlights and taillights on at all times. He will need to have a wire attached to a relay that is activated when the ignition is switched on and separate wiring for the DRLs. A fun little project and I am waiting for a picture or two if he gets it sorted out.

That's it Klaus!
If I can remove the trim under the headlight maybe there's room for
4-6 1 watt LEDs (in separate sockets) that put out plenty of light.
The other bonus is that since they don't draw huge current I could have
maybe 4 lights on each side for a total of 8 watts that would easily run
off the ACC circuit without a relay.

How Does that trim come off, and since I don't use the headlight washers, I could remove that stuff and put DRLs just under the headlights where they would be
highly visible.

Thanks, Bill

That plastic trim piece is held on with folded metal tabs. It actually just pulls straight out. I practiced on a P&P version. It is easier with the headlight out, of course, but you could take it off and then put the headlight back on while you are playing with it. The metal clips tend to fall off when not jammed in by the plastic.

Piece of cake.

The hard part for me would be the switchable wire to connect the relay to. Don't forget to fuse the hot wires.
