850 Head gasket 850

I have a 96 850 (2nd owever) and it needs new head gasket at 144,000 The quote is 1600 (please note that I can't do the work) plus a new timing belt. If this was my 240 I would do it, but my 240 would never need this. Is the 850 worth this investment being this old? Is this a common problem with them?
I bought from original owner, decent shape. I bought it because I loved our 240's, one still going at 250,000.

For what it's worth, I'd probably fix it, but I can do most of this myself. These cars (non-turbos) are worth 2500 bucks, max it seems. So, if yours is in good shape, fix, if it's got some other big issues, I'd get another one for 2500 bucks or less. Just my nickels worth of thought here. Good luck.

Sorry about your troubles.

If it's any consolation, most high mileage 240's do eventually need head gaskets. Actually, it's a pretty rare problem on 850's.

FWIW - My 95 855 has about 225k and has never needed a head gasket. Uses zero coolant. My 244 used a little coolant, but the head gasket was still okay at 300k when I sold it.

What kind of car can you get to replace the 850 for $1600? Generally I've found Volvo's to be undervalued and under appreciated in the use car market. I think you get a much better car for the money that you would with a comparable BMW or Audi, say. You don't have a high mileage 850. Go for the repair and enjoy the next 100k or so.
