Help with choosing our next Volvo wagon V70-XC70

Just wondering if I could get a few tips on what certain makes / years to avoid when shopping. My wife has been driving a 240 wagon for close to 3 years with absolutely no problems. Pretty amazing for a 20 year old unrestored vehicle. As long as she checks the oil, the old girl will keep on running. My wife is ready to buy something a little newer and wants some ammenities like cup holders and heated leather. She really wants to stay with a Volvo wagon but I don't want to buy a lemon and you hear some mixed reviews about the v70/xc70's. Please let me know what too look for or avoid.
thanks
Jake

"Jwalker" gave you the correct advice, but I would like to add a bit more.

The turning radius on the V/XC70 is much greater than the 245 and requires a learning curve in parking lots. Of course, newer is better (2003+) and 2001-2002 are to be avoided, but the price goes up. For example:

appears to be nice, but you do need owner history for any car. The timing belt interval has been getting longer and for 2007 it is around 120K miles.

        You bought an 01 V70 V70-XC70

Buyer beware. Of a 5 speed tranny falling apart, so change the ATF on a regular basis (20K miles) and NEVER use a machine to pump the fluid! At least drain the 3309 fluid (buy it at Toyota) and refill, use an aluminum crush washer. Measure what comes out and put in exactly the same amount.

2001 is a new body for the V70. New wiring, new computers, new fuse boxes, new seats, and all untested at the factory - for longevity.

Save up money for a replacement, it will come sooner rather than later.

"all fluids changed", do you have documentation on which fluids? Is the ATF still pink/bright red? Remember, power steering is Pentosin, very expensive stuff.

2008 is the oldest XC 70 with the latest body style.

We just got a fully loaded one for $16,500 with 78k on it and new tires and rotors. My dealer gave it a clean bill of health.

    Our last batch of cars were a '95 855 base, a '96 854 base, and a '96 855R - they all lasted us 11 years.

    Get her a nice car.

As Clint Eastwood says, "do you feel lucky, Punk?" Try to buy one from someone you know who can speak to its history. No matter which you buy, expect them to be very needy as they get older. Get the deluxe AAA membership, as I did for my wife. It's good insur for marital harmony as these bricks will break down. I presume that you are a DIY or you wouldn't be on BB. The beautiful thing is that you have let someone else take the massive depreciation hit [the greatest hidden cost of car ownership]

95-97 850 wagons are great and relatively simple.

98-2000 V70's. 1998 is best as the 99 and 2000 models had some throttle problems but are still good cars. No AWD. Early AWD models can be troublesome.

    Avoid 2001 and 2002. 2003+ FWD's are good. So are 2004+ AWD's.

Just got a 98 xc and love it original owner, keep in a heated garage, and a folder
full of invoices based on the window sticker of $37,000 I paid 4.2 cents on the dollar!!
If you have rough roads the extra clearance is fantastic. But these are sophisticated cars and not for the faint of heart. If you don't do all your
own work your sunk . You have to love working on them.
IMHO it is the best volvo yet and I have owned every older model except the 444
