850 starting problem 850 1995

I have read several posts about warm starting problems, but am not sure if mine is the same. Car starts fine cold and runs fine. Running errands, after a few stops, it cranked but would not start. I waited about 5 minutes and it started. The second time, a couple weeks later, it started but barely ran, at very low RPM and would not respond to accelerator. Tried several times but no luck. While waiting for the tow truck, after 15 minutes I tried again and it started right up.

Your fuel pump may be on it's last legs, or the fuel pump relay may no longer work when hot. Easy enough to check both, but check the relay first as it is much cheaper and easier.

Thanks. Do I check the relay by jumping it when it's not starting (which is random)? If it started one time but had no power, could that still be the relay or more likely the pump?

Jumping the leads only bypasses the relay and forces the pump to engage when the key is in posII.

Because the relay has a greater tendancy to fail in high heat conditions and is so much cheaper than a pump, it should be examined first.

A weak, failing pump has the same symptoms but is more expensive to diagnose.

If it started, but it does not run well or their was no engine power it is most likely the pump.
