Castrol Syntech ??? V70-XC70 2001

I just scheduled my 7500 mile service and asked the service tech if they have a synthetic oil as an option for the oil change. He said they can use Castrol Syntech for about $25 more. Is this a good price? Is this a good oil? When I asked if they recommend a synthetic, he hesitated to give me a straight answer, only saying that he uses it in his Chevy truck that has 120k on it. Also, if I do go with the synthetic, can the change interval be greater then 7500? Thanks for all feedback everyone. Tom.

Castrol is only "allowed" to call Syntech "synthetic" because they won a legal case. It's not really made from a synthetic base stock. Castrol is king of hype and is IMHO responsible for many premature engine deaths with their 20W-50 ad campaign that started in the 70's. In a short nutshell: This was mainly due to the pour point solvents and thickeners crapping out, making the oil WAY to thick for proper flow at cool temperatures.

Anyhow use a real synthetic and stick with 7500 miles (turbos are 10,000 max anyway with the best synthetic oil: Amsoil)

By all means, go with synthetic. Castrol would not be near the top on my list of preferred synthetics. They reformulated and are using a less expensive (and not as good) base stock.

While you could probably run either AMSOIL or Mobil 1 for a longer interval, you shouldn't do that without oil analysis while it is under warranty. Heck, 7500 mile drain is really cheap insurance.

If you use synthetic I would use it for better protection/performance, not to extend the service interval. I am not a fan of Castrol. Had some nasty stuff happen to my Saab with it. If I were you I would bring my own oil to the shop, and make them knock off whatever they usually charge for oil. You can get 6 quarts of Mobile One or Royal Purple for under 30 dollars.

        Re: Castrol Syntech ??? V70-XC70 2001

I had good success at teardown using Castrol GTX 20W50 on a 462 ci big block chev - 7200rpm shift point - flat tappet race camshaft - all bearings looked excellent and camshaft (the best place to look for general oil-related film strenght issues) and lifter faces were wonderful.(1992)

From that point I stepped up again - lower rpm and greater cylinder pressure (nitrous setup) - and used Esso 15W50 (till 1997) one change of CaSTROL 5w50 (after seeing the bearing material in the waste oil - NEVER AGAIN) Mobil 1 till now - cam looks the same (wonderful - for the time period).

I would not use castrol products (in light of the above link and other info I have) in any application. Fresh cam this season - Quaker 20W50 for break in (20 min of 2000-3000 rpm cycling) then Mobil 1 thereafter.
