Bad bevel gear? Transmission problem? V70-XC70 1998

My 1998 V70 AWD (about 161000 miles) is making some odd noises, and I cannot really tell where they are coming from. From the driver's seat, it sounds as though it is coming from just in front of the shifter, and with the windows open it seems to come more from the right side than the left. It is a clicking or rattling noise. I am wondering whether anyone knows what a bevel gear that is going/has gone bad sounds like, or, worse, what a bad transmission sounds like.

This exact same thing has happened to us a few times..
and its allways been the Rear Drive Axle front joint. (because its so close to a heat source)

if so all you need is this

and some elbow grease as its a bit fiddly to get it off

Before you get too carried away, check the heat shield above the exhaust. It can rust and fall down on the prop shaft. Bevel gears don't make clicking sounds.

I assume you are driving slowly, so does the noise change with direction changes or accelleration?

      Hi Klaus,

I do tend to get carried away: I get a headache and diagnose myself with a brain tumor. :)

The noise tends to change with direction changes (especially right turns)and with acceleration, both, but it doesn't change a lot, just gets maybe a little louder.

What sound (if any) does a failing bevel gear make? Would you recommend I have the bevel gear oil changed, or, assuming that the noise is NOT the bevel gear or the transmission, should I just leave well enough alone?

      Thanks, as always!

The bevel gear oil is supposed to be drained every 50K miles. There is a procedure to make this easier than trying to syphon it out from the filler hole:

        http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how_tos/transmissions_driveshafts/awd_bevel_gear_service.html

Any good mechanic can do this, but I would perfer to DIY or an experianced Volvo guy who has done this before. I don't have a 90degree drill.

Could your noise come from a bad front axle CV joint? Bad bearing?

If all else fails, leave the bevel gear on the tranny and remove the prop shaft. This is easy to do and if you have storage, you can always put it back on. Just mark it up real good so it goes back on without being out of balance.

          Thanks again, Klaus.

Would a bad bevel gear make a noise, or does is just quietly stop working?

Also, on another note, how often should one have the transmission flushed? I have both the '98 v70 AWD and a 2004 xc90 2.5 (great car, murder on tires, bad wheel bearings)?

          Thanks

The bevel gear never makes noise until it is dead, then it will make grinding noise at low speed that you can feel in the seat of your pants.

The tranny fluid and bevel gear fluid should be flushed at 100K (max) and about 30K intervals after that.

Go ahead and treat the Brick's slushbox to a Magnafine filter while you are at it. goes inline on way to the radiator. $25 cheap insurance.

Noticed lately that what seems to be the tranny shifting hard when going from second into first aproaching a stop light. Also when shifting from P into R. This does not happen all the tine & in fact, infrequently.
I`m hoping, of course, that it`s not tranny issues & something less expensive.
          Love this XC70!
          Thanks,
          Rich

Is your tranny software up to date? When was the last time it was flushed? Check the fluid for color and level.

Not a CV, that would click when you stepped on the brake, or brake to gas.

Also check the engine mounts, just to be on the safe side.

It is almost time to start looking for a 2013-14 XC60 for your wife. The 3 litre turbo has 300bhp, and drives great.

              Thanks for your response, Klaus.
OK, so I can eliminate the bad CV joint. Will look into the other possibilities.
You`re right about the XC60......we`ve been talking about that model for awhile now. Have you driven one? We`ve looked at them in the dealer showroom but $60K is a little "rich" for the budget right now.
