'01 S60 A/C Quits when temp >100F S60 2001

Twice now the a/c in my '01 S60 has quit when the outside temp has exceeded 100F. It ran fine for about 2 hours, then quit. After sitting in the shade for an hour with the engine off, the a/c worked again for the trip home (about 45 min.) I've done the bread-clip repair on the a/c clutch about 2 years ago and they all seem to be still in place. Any ideas on how to keep this from happening?

check to be sure that the rad cooling fan is running when the A/C stops. I have been battling this same issue here in 100d washn DC all summer and it finally was traced to the cooling fan relay overheating and opening. Then it cools and all is normal. I learned my lesson- only Volvo relays in the blue box....

Your bread clips may not be as thick as they were 2 years ago, lots of clutch pounding on them, plus the wear on the clutch plate. You can check the gap with a feeler gauge, or just push on the edge of the clutch and see if there is a visible gap where the bread clip goes.

I just gapped mine with metal strips and glue today. AC works at 97F.

KlausC: What sort of gap is acceptable? Thanks for the help.

I just went from around .022 to around .015. My 1998 V70 was close to .040 and I knocked that down to .020.
The electro magnet gets harder to pull when it gets hot and old.

I got the car up on the lift this morning and measured the distance that the part of the clutch closest to the right front tire protrudes beyond the rim of the drive pulley. Is this the correct place to measure? It measured 0.025". Thanks.

Yes, correct. The ambient temperature does have a direct impact on the ability of the electromagnet to pull in and grab the clutch. There is also an internal thermostat in the rear of the compressor which may get too hot and cut out the compressor. Both of these items can be fixed cheaply. First, the clutch:

Read from the start and go down to the "UPDATE" where he mentions doing the same to an S60, but using copper sheet metal. I used thin aluminum sheet metal, doubled over to get a reasonable thickness. I spread glue on both sides and with the clutch plate pushed in, slid the clip into place.

            http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/80181-850-ac-clutch-gap-fix/

I used a pair of pliers to hold the glued shim and push the shim into place. Just fingers will not work. Remember, you can easily turn the clutch by hand.

If, after placing in 2 shims, there is any noise (dragging) as you turn the clutch, the shims are too thick and must be removed!! The clearance can go down to .018 or so.

Now, if the compressor still cuts out at 100F+, it might be the thermal switch in the rear of the compressor. Take a good look at the rear of the compressor for 2 black wires coming out of what looks like a 15mm bolt head. Follow both wires - they should each go to a connector. To bypass the thermal switch, disconnect both connectors and connect the wires that do NOT go to the thermal switch. The original black wires can be connected to each other, just to make it look cleaner.

Made shims from cat food lid and added them to the bread clips installed
previously. Clearance down to 0.010". Doesn't seem to be touching anywhere
              when I turn by hand.
