engine overheat notification V70-XC70 2001

Ok, here we go again.
In August i posted about my 2001 n/a v70 cooling fan and thanks for your replies but the car ran fine after that, till last night when the temp gauge went off the dial and turn engine off message displayed. My 19yr old was driving and i dont know at this stage whether it was a gradual rise in temp or sudden. This morning i went to the car which had been sitting overnight and when i turned the ign on, the gauge was still in the red with the same turn off engine message.
the cooling fan was running
plenty of coolant in the tank
do you think the likely suspects are
temp sender
sticky thermostat
why would the dim indicate overheat and the fan be running even though the engine was cold
i am aware that the DIM's in these cars are not the best but would a faulty temp gauge control the cooling fan?
I look forward to your thoughts once again with thanks
David
PS i will remove the thermostat till the issue resolved

Thanks for the great info.I will look into that tool, and in the meantime replace the ECT and see if this makes a difference. Ill post.

Hi Klaus, measured as instructed and came up with a reading 2370 ohms. This is not far from 2500, enough you think to be a problem ?

Not bad for a temperature of around 70F. Here are the specs:

      32F --- 7300 Ohms
      68F --- 2800
      104F -- 1200
      176F -- 300
      212F -- 150

Nice linear curve. The instrument panel temp gauge also uses the signal from the ECT sensor, so it is surprising to see it suddenly drop to zero. I don't think the DIM came to be until 2002.

I suggest finding a laser temperature tool to check the actual temperature of the thermostat housing. I just bought one for $30, it is fun to use!

    Another piece of the puzzle
My son said both times that this has happened he had the heater and fan at maximum.
When i started it to drive it home, the temp gauge dropped to zero and the warning went away
when i got home ( 1 min drive ) the engine was still cold but the radiator fan kept going
i hope this lends a little more light on the subject

Check the resistance at the ECT sensor with your voltmeter. With a cold engine it should be around 2500 or so, if it is less than 250 Ohms then it is kaput.
