Door check question 850 1995

I've read posts about broken door checks, noise they cause, etc. My driver's door swings freely with no check (not a good thing, especially if it's windy or parked on a slope) and no noise. Is this also a symptom of a broken door check? Is using a junkyard part advisable? Chances are it would be newer than mine.

ANSWER Door check question 850 1995

Getting a junk yard part is not a problem, but I suggest getting one from the left rear door as it is used much less than the other doors. You just need to remove the door panel, and catch the door check before it falls down to the bottom of the door well.

It is a bit tricky to install as it needs to go through the opening at a 90 degree angle.

Your car is probably old enough for a new window guide. When they break, the glass will rattle when you shut the door. I don't know if the rear door will help for a donor for the front door.

This post has been marked as an answer to the original question.

Thanks. The rear door check (strap) was longer and hard to fit into the front. But I got a passenger side check which went in fine -- hopefully less wear than the driver's side. There were a lot of newer Volvos than mine in the junkyard -- too bad!

Sorry, my mistake. I never measured the one I got from a rear door and have as a spare in my shop, it looks like it is brand new compared to the old driver's door that failed.

Yes, that is always so sad to see those nice cars with great options waiting to be stripped. Makes you wonder what was really wrong with them to begin with.

...sad to see those nice cars with great options waiting to be "crushed within a week"...
At least that's the case around here. It's a shame for a car guy.
