Lost my master key S60 2005

Friends tell me that I can just buy a replacement on eBay and program it myself. Is that possible? The more reputable sounding eBay dealers say I need to find out by the VIN if it is even factory installed.

Can I just go to a locksmith to have the key part cut?

Am I just better off ordering a new one through my mechanic/dealer? (It's not an actual Volvo dealership. It's called Swedish Auto and they service and sell only used Volvos and Saabs.)

I was looking into getting a new key fob for my 2003 V70. My understanding is that you have to purchase a new key/fob PLUS let dealer have both the car and the new key to get it all programmed and sync'd up. At the one dealer I tried it was going to be close to $200 by the time it was all said and done.

If you have a good Volvo independent mechanic that has the necessary programming tools, you may get off a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the reply.

I phoned my independent garage and placed the order for key and remote. It's expensive, ~$350. They will program it for me. My husband has another master key, but the remote part is broken. I may look into replacing the remote part at a later time. He doesn't drive and doesn't feel a great need for the remote part. He opens the doors or trunk when he needs to get something out of the car or put something in it.

When are Canadians going to revolt? Your prices reflect the Loonie when it was worth only 60 cents US. Now that the Loonie is = or greater value than the dollar, why haven't your prices reflected this????

If your husband's remote is broken due to the plastic case being dropped or run over, you could buy a new case and transfer all of the internals to the new case.

Good idea, but it's the internals that don't work. The case is fine. :(

The Canadian Revolt S60 2005

Klaus,
I wish I could tell you that Canadians are about to storm the barricades. Alas, they are sadly an apathetic bunch & willing to pay whatever price dealers will gouge them.
I have mounted my own personal revolt but I`m a lone cry in the wilderness. A few years ago my truck was in need of a new radiator. The local GMC dealer wanted $1500, the local Napa was asking $600. So I called a Napa dealer in Montana & was quoted $150 USD. WE drove down to MT & when I picked it up at Napa I fully expected to see "Made in China" on the box. Imagine my shock when I saw "Made in Canada"!!
Tangential to the above, are you aware that US car dealers will not sell new cars to Canadian buyers? There is no "law" but it is a pervasive policy by the automakers. Recently I saw a feature investigative program on this issue so next day I called a Montana Volvo dealer. Sure enuff, the sales rep told me they can`t sell to Canadians. However, he did say that they could be "creative" if I was interested in a new Volvo. The XC60 model we aere interested in was $17K less in Montana. That`s a significant disparity!!
Merry Xnas!
Rich
