Are there any years to avoid? I have read about tranny problems with the early 60's and was just curious about the 40. Looking for a first car for a new driver and I have seen some great prices on some 2000 and 2001 40's

Our '01 has been a good car. Purchased it from a family member for my daughter who was 17 at the time.
It has 180000 miles on it now and has been trouble free.

Early S40s did have all sorts of problems.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Volvos. They are safe but they also take a lot of TLC. I went on our local Craigslist and on the first page found this:

Not bad for a reasonably safe teen car. The price is right. Probably has 200K miles on it, who knows. I just show it so you keep your options open.

All of them? I just don't like the S/V40... Probably 2004+ would be reliable.

There are some nice s70s, just avoid any with a 5 speed tranny. But let the 'kid' help with what they want, otherwise you will wind up with neglected junk.
