Can Speedometer/odometer be calibrated? 850 1996

My 1996 Volvo Platinum Limited Edition (44k miles) is off about 3.5 mph (the wrong way) and the odometer is off as well (about 5%). The tire size is stock, and there have been no modifications to anything which should matter to the speedometer/odometer.

Can this be calibrated in some useful way, or do I have to live with it?

Bob

Not considered a serious problem 850 1996

I don't think you should be overly concerned about the speedo error. You did not mention at what speed the error referred to. Assuming it is at 60 mph, 3.5 mph is well within the legal (North America) tolerated error of plus/minus 6 mph. I doubt if you will find anyone interested in trying to adjust it - my dealer said that there was no fix, for the 2001 models, but I would be pleased to be proven wrong so that I could have my 4 mph error (reads high) adjusted.

Re: Can Speedometer/odometer be calibrated? 850 1996

When I picked up my '99 V70T5 at the factory, I got into a conversation with the delivery person about different wheels and tires. He told me that when they changed wheels and tires for a customer recently, they had to send the car back into the shop to have the computer recalibrated to compensate for the different tire size. IF that was true, then there is some degree of calibration possible through the computer.

Re: Can Speedometer/odometer be calibrated? S70 1998

there are places that you can go to that will recalibrate that stuff though I dont know of any offhand. If not, its also possible to get new gaues assuming the old ones are broken and its not something else along the line. This however is mighty expensive (600 bucks for three gauges in S70). Ask you local dealer what they suggest. They might be able to calibrate it or send you to someone who can.
