I had this same problem which turned out to be........ well there's a little door on the top of the fuel tank and it is opened to get at the interior fuel pump. That circle-shaped door was not securely fastened by the many screws that are supposed to hold it tight. The remedy was to remove the rear seat back and tighten all the screws
